We've come to the penultimate issue of X-Factor, and still the series remains locked into the same piecemeal approach that has dominated this arc. This time around, Darwin and Monet are the stars of the show. The result is one of the stronger chapters of "The End of X-Factor," though this issue still manages to frustrate as often as it satisfies.
The main problem with issue #261 is that Peter David devotes too much time to Darwin and not enough to Monet. Both characters still have open conflicts that needed addressing, but given the limited space this series has left, Monet's should have been prioritized. She's the one that was recently killed and brought back to life by the new lord of Hell. Instead, David focuses much of his attention on Darwin's quest to track down Hela in Las Vegas and give up his deathly powers. Luckily, once the two characters reconnect, the issue is able to offer some enjoyable and heartfelt interaction. The duo finally confront the romantic tension between them and the lingering fallout of Monet's brush with death. This issue doesn't leave them in a completely satisfying place, emotionally, but such is the case with most of these recent one-shot issues.
Neil Edwards' art is generally well-suited to this dramatic but largely dialogue-driven issue. He brings a somber, dreary mood to the normally neon-drenched streets of Las Vegas. And there are many panels where his dramatic framing and intricate detail wow the eye. But in other cases, his figures and facial work can look stiff and awkward. But generally, his art delivers where it matters most.
This reunion deserved more space than David was able to give it. This discrete, episodic approach to wrapping up the series has merely ensured that no character has received the time and attention they deserve. There's a lot to make up for in next month's finale. Hopefully David is up to the challenge.
