The Invincible Iron Man #524 Review

Tony Stark has a long history of fighting to stop his armor designs from being stolen and exploited by various villains. But as the third Armor Wars conflict kicks off in the latest issue of Invincible Iron Man, Tony finds himself with some unlikely allies. And that's where Future is at its most appealing. Matt Fraction focuses a great deal of attention on Tony and Ezekiel Stane, showing the odd progression their relationship has taken since their first showdown at the very beginning of the series. Throw a few more classic Iron man villains into the mix and you've got the recipe for one memorable team-up.

Fraction connects a few more pieces of the puzzle in issue #524, revealing more about the role Justine Hammer is filling and just what is going on with JARVIS lately. This latter reveal is interesting, though it comes across as a bit random and unnecessary in the context of the larger conflicts of the series. Also troubling is that we still don't have much of an idea about what Rhodey is up to with his Iron Man masquerade and how he factors into Tony's ultimate plan. There are a lot of fun character moments in this issue, but not necessarily a great deal of plot progression.

The artwork doesn't shine that well in this issue, mostly because Frank D'Armata's colors tend to overpower the pencils even more than usual. There are a handful of panels where Salvador Larroca's line-work gains a greater level of detail and precision, but that isn't the case nearly enough. As usual, Larroca's action scenes and armored characters look great. This issue stands out because there's now a small army of Iron Men creating havoc. It's the human characters that have looked and continue to look unnatural.

What's the Deal with Iron Man 3's Armor?

Starting from the original Iron Man all the way up until The Avengers, there have been seven iterations of Tony Stark's Iron Man armor. An eighth version to appear in Marvel's Iron Man 3 was revealed and displayed at Comic-Con back in July. Watch out for spoilers on the details of that suit below!

It sounds like the muted gold and crimson suit we ogled at SDCC was not the Mark VIII, but the forty-seventh Iron Man armor: the Mark XLVII. As Latino Review recently explained:

"The Extremis-enhanced bad guys under direction of Ben Kingsley’s Mandarin villain are going to be too much for Tony to handle on his own, so he thinks ahead, thinks big and has a plan. Tony’s about to go out and fight some bad guys when he mentions the Mark XLVII to Pepper Potts. Pepper asks what happened to the other forty and Tony just smiles.

"From the cockpit of Mark XLVII Tony is able to control multiple armors in battle. We over here at LR have been vaguely aware of an action scene where Tony was going to control multiple Iron Man suits (presumably they look similar to distract his enemies as to the location of kill-able Iron Man Prime), but the number 40 seems... awesome. 40 Iron Men." 14 Killed at Dark Knight Rises Screening

A gunman, reportedly masked and dressed in body armor, opened fire today at an early morning screening of The Dark Knight Rises in Aurora, Colorado, killing 14 and wounding roughly 50. Several children were among the victims, including a 9-year-old girl. Police have the suspect in custody. The gunman is said to be in his 20s.

The Denver Post quotes survivors and witnesses as saying the man entered the theater dressed in body armor and carrying a canister that released gas. Initially, not all audience members realized they were under attack as they believed the sounds of gunfire were part of the movie.

Associated Press reports that the gunman "stood at the front of the theater and fired into the crowd about 12:30 a.m. MDT at a multiplex theater in a mall in Aurora. 'Witnesses tell us he released some sort of canister. They heard a hissing sound and some gas emerged and the gunman opened fire,"Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said at a news conference."

The gunman is not believed to have had any accomplices and no motive for the crime has yet been reported. Police also checked a local apartment searching for explosives, reportedly based on comments made by the suspect, whose identity has not been revealed.

10 victims are said to have died at the theater and four at hospitals. The youngest victim is said to be 6-years-old being treated at Children's Hospital Colorado, where 10 victims were taken.

President Obama released the following statement on the shooting: "Michelle and I are shocked and saddened by the horrific and tragic shooting in Colorado. Federal and local law enforcement are still responding, and my Administration will do everything that we can to support the people of Aurora in this extraordinarily difficult time. We are committed to bringing whoever was responsible to justice, ensuring the safety of our people, and caring for those who have been wounded. As we do when confronted by moments of darkness and challenge, we must now come together as one American family. All of us must have the people of Aurora in our thoughts and prayers as they confront the loss of family, friends, and neighbors, and we must stand together with them in the challenging hours and days to come.ople of Aurora in our thoughts and prayers as they confront the loss of family, friends, and neighbors."
