After its usual summer break, South Park is returning for the second half of Season 16 tonight - actually a couple of weeks earlier than usual.
The midseason premiere, "Sarcastaball," is a Randy-centric one, as Randy becomes concerned about safety during football games at South Park Elementary. while the new rules he brings to the game end up being adopted by the entire nation, one gifted student emerges as a star athlete in Sarcastaball.

Since its debut in June, the animated series Gravity Falls has proven to be a very clever and witty addition to the Disney Channel lineup. And tonight’s brand new episode, called “Fight Fighters”, should prove especially notable for IGN readers, as it’s all about video games.
In “Fight Fighters”, Dipper (Jason Ritter) is challenged to a video game contest and is shocked when his favorite fighting game character, Rumble McSkirmish (prolific animation and video game voice actor Brian Bloom) comes to life to help him. However, Dipper soon finds that controlling Rumble is not so easy…
Check out a couple of clips from the episode below. While old school fighting games like Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat are the clear initial inspiration, you’ll see some notable nods to other games as well.
Gravity Falls: “Fight Fighters” airs Friday, September 14th at 9:30pm ET/PT on Disney Channel.
The first thing I'll say is that what happened live tonight on RAW was not a part of a WWE storyline...
During a match involving Daniel Bryan and Kane vs. The Prime Time Players, and shortly following his own match against CM Punk and Dolph Ziggler, 62 year-old commentator and WWE Hall of Famer Jerry "The King" Lawler became short of breath and collapsed at the announce table, falling to the floor. During this time, the cameras did not show what was happening, but viewers at home could see the crowd watching off to the side as a medical team came down to attend to Lawler.
Michael Cole, Lawler's co-commentator, understandably shaken, continued to call the match on his own while Lawler was placed on a stretcher and taken backstage. Twitter erupted, with everyone wondering what had happened to Lawler. The rest of the night was a surreal experience as Cole came back on intermittently to give the viewers health updates throughout the night. After receiving CPR backstage, Lawler was taken to a local Montreal medical facility where he was placed in an isolated ER and given oxygen through a tube. The final update, before RAW went off the air, was that Lawler was now breathing on his own and responsive to light. He is to undergo a CT scan on his head and chest. The doctors have listed him in "stable" condition.
The final hour of RAW's three-hour broadcast from Montreal went commentary-free as a tribute to Lawler.

It was amusing this week to see that Jay Leno and NBC were cool with imagery (and the actual Tonight Show set) being seen on Louie in the manner they were used, but CBS clearly did not sign off on anything – hence, the fake posters for series like Lethal Renegade and The Big House in the “CBS offices.” I’m guessing they didn’t like the idea of a story based around the “David Letterman is retiring” scenario that one day will become real for them – and didn’t want to be part of something so speculative on the subject. (But sure, I bet Seinfeld’s name would be part of the mix!)
This episode was another great mixture of comedy and drama – almost evenly split, in that the first half had some of the funniest material of the season, while the second half (Well, he final scene, really) got really, really intense.
Louie’s opening monologue about putting too much thought into buying a Blu-ray player was hysterical, as he talked about reading an Amazon review from, “An insane person who’s been dead for months because he shot his wife and then himself.”
What’s interesting is we never see anything beyond Louie’s introduction on Leno – so we don’t know what exactly it was that he said/did that “went viral” (love Louie’s, “I’m what?!” response to that). I think that’s a good choice – we all know Louie is a funny guy, and it’s left to our imagination to decide what it was that has given him his moment in the sun. How great was Louie throwing down the coat they tried to put on him as he walked out onstage?
Garry Marshall has been on a role of directing crappy movies lately like New Year’s Eve and Valentine’s Day, but I’ll always love him as the network exec in Soapdish (“peppy and cheap!”). That being the case, it was great seeing him show up in a similar role here, as the CBS exec who was being brutally honest with Louie.
What a monologue Marshall gave Louie in the closing moments of this show! The fact that he was so straight up with Louie about seeing him as a low-cost backup for Jerry Seinfeld and that if Louie failed, it would kill Louie’s career but not his, was funny, in that oh-so dark way this show can be. But then it got just intense and emotional (complete with stirring music), as Marshall’s character began going deep on where Louie is at in his life, saying he’d probably peaked and “You’re circling failure in a rapidly decaying orbit.” It was uncomfortable and intense and awesome.
And it’s just the beginning of a three-parter, so I’m excited.
Star Wars: The Clone Wars had its Season 5 premiere tonight at Star Wars Celebration VI. And while I will be holding my full review of that premiere until it actually airs, I will say that it is a very cool, action-packed season opener, that continues that Obi-Wan vs. Darth Maul & Savage Opress drama that was in play when Season 4 ended.
After the screening, there was a Q&A with The Clone Wars’ supervising director, Dave Filoni and the voice of Darth Maul, Sam Witwer. But Filoni also had another surprise in his pocket – as the Q&A ended, he revealed we would be seeing the brand new trailer for The Clone Wars: Season 5.
The trailer will be playing again tomorrow at the full Clone Wars panel at Star Wars Celebration (and likely will be online within the next few days), but I have to note a couple of highlights from it...
Namely, Darth Sidious fighting Darth Maul and Savage Opress! This was the part where the audience lost it. We’ve seen the holographic version of Sidious on The Clone Wars (and plenty more of his alter-ego, Palpatine), but in Season 5, it’s clear Sidious gets into the thick of it. Filoni had previously indicated the fact that they wouldn’t ignore how many Dark Side Force users/Sith are in play and how that violates the rule of two. And the trailer shows Sidious taking on both his former apprentice, Maul, and Maul’s brother, using two red lightsabers!
That footage definitely stole the show, but there was a lot of other cool moments as well, including Maul battling Death Watch leader Pre Vizsla and Maul also leading a group of Death Watch himself. There were moments indicating a big rift in Death Watch and the potential for all out war among the Mandalorians, as Vizsla talks about resorting them to the warriors they once were. The Death Watch vs. Death Watch aspect was previously hinted at in the below scene from Season 5, released at Comic-Con, which also shows Obi-Wan gets very mixed up in this scenario.
The end of the trailer also revealed both The Clone Wars premiere date and its new timeslot: Season 5 will premiere on September 29th, as the show moves from Friday nights to Saturday mornings at 9:30am.
Tonight, the Television Critics Association (of which both IGN TV's Executive Editor Eric Goldman and I are members) recognized the top programs and actors of the 2011-2012 television season at its 28th Annual TCA Awards presentation. Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston hosted the annual invitation-only event, held at the Beverly Hilton hotel in conjunction with the TCA’s summer press tour.
HBO's Game of Thrones captured (presumably with fire and blood) the top honor of "Program of the Year" while comedian Louis C.K. took home two awards; "Outstanding Achievement in Comedy" (for his series Louie) and "Individual Achievement in Comedy" (for his performance on the series).
Too bad there's no Individual Achievement in Douchebag.
Showtime's riveting counter-terrorism series Homeland also took home two awards - one for "Outstanding New Program" and one for lead Claire Danes in "Individual Achievement in Drama." Meanwhile, Downton (Spanish flu induced?) fever wasn't just for last week's Emmy Award nominations as Masterpiece: Downton Abbey won the 2012 TCA Award for "Outstanding Achievement in Movies, Miniseries and Specials."
In the "Outstanding Achievement in Drama" category, AMC's Breaking Bad took the top prize while the classic Bostonian bar sitcom Cheers beat out nominees such as Twin Peaks and Lost to take home the Heritage Award. Here is the full list:
