FX is closing a deal to develop filmmaker Guillermo del Toro's vampire novel trilogy, The Strain, for television. Lost's Carlton Cuse is already on board as showrunner.
Variety reports that the network is in final negotiations to order a pilot with the understanding that the project will likely be fast-tracked to a series order if they do. Del Toro is set to co-write the first episode along with author Chuck Hogan, who worked with Del Toro on the HarperCollins books. As Del Toro notes, the TV show will also have a defined ending and date set. The Strain has already been turned into a Dark Horse comic book series.
The Strain marks a first for FX, which has never before ordered a pilot on pitch alone -- Cinemax and Starz were also in the mix to develop the series at one point.
Current plans are for Hogan to direct the pilot, which will begin shooting in Toronto fall 2013.
If The Strain goes forward, it'l be a busy time for Cuse, who is also serving as showrunner on A&E's Psycho prequel series, Bates Motel.
