It seems we have Russell Crowe to thank for Hugh Jackman landing the coveted role of Wolverine in the X-Men movies.
Speaking to Australian radio station Triple M 104.9 (which we found via Yahoo) Jackman revealed that his friend was first in line to don the iconic claws.
“Bryan Singer asked Rusty (Crowe) to do Wolverine, and he said ‘Nah mate, I’ve just done Gladiator, it’s not for me but you should look at this other guy…’”
And though Dougray Scott initially bagged the part, the role was soon re-cast with Jackman taking over, and the rest is history, with the Australian playing the character four times thus far, with a fifth hitting when The Wolverine is released next July.
Before then, Jackman will be seen playing Jean Valjean opposite Crowe’s Javert in Les Miserables.
Chris Tilly is the Entertainment Editor for IGN in the UK and vaguely remembers being briefly considered for the role of Wolverine before Jackman. His rambling can be found on both Twitter and MyIGN.
