Transformers 4 Shooting in Asia?

Location manager Ilt Jones, who previously scouted for all three Transformers films, recently paid a visit to Thailand, where he explored Bangkok as a potential shooting locale for Paramount's Transformers 4.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the trip was part of the Thailand Film Office's "Inbound Roadshow Familiarization Tour," a new promotional exercise encouraging a boost in foreign shooting in the "tourism and lens-friendly Southeast Asian nation." The visiting group was comprised of a select few Hollywood veterans in the location management circuit, including reps from Disney, Warner Bros. and 20th Century Fox. Jones was invited on behalf of Marvel.

But why have the next Transformers shoot in Asia? Well first, according to Vulture, Michael Bay likely has plans to have the story take place in mainland China. Of course, the reasoning behind this isn't exactly for the sake of narrative. Rather, Bay and Paramount are hoping to land a wide release in China, a country with a huge potential box office.

"By getting Chinese culture into it, there's a better chance of getting it into China," said one insider, "and less chance of getting frozen out."

However, Paramount spokesperson Katie Martin Kelley noted that, as of today, Transformers 4 will not be going the way of Avatar 2 and Iron Man 3 by making the film a Chinese co-production. "All I can say is, 'It is not a Chinese co-production,' and that's where things stand right now," she said.

Production for Transformers 4 begins in the spring for a June 27, 2014 release.
