The world of Daredevil: End of Days is a bleak one. It's rundown and tired. Everyone looks like they are about to quit or die. Ben Urich keeps digging into the murder of Daredevil and keeps getting nowhere. By the end of this issue, it's hard to not feel as defeated as he does, which is sort of the point. This is a seriously great series that becomes more and more of a bummer every month (in a good way).
This issue, like the two before it, is dialogue heavy. In fact, it's basically just characters standing around talking to each other on every single page. Of course, it's written by Brian Bendis, so that dialogue is truly glorious. If you have read any of Bendis' pre-superhero work, you know that he excels when it comes to crime stuff and that's essentially what you get here. Murder, mystery, and intrigue peppered with the occasional superhero flashback. But mostly murder.
Adding to the rundown, broken feeling of the book is the art work of Klaus Janson and Bill Sienkiewicz. It's killer stuff. This doesn't look like the Marvel Universe we know, but rather a future version of it where things haven't advanced. We also get some painted spreads by David Mack that are unbelievable. This is kind of stuff you want to hang on your wall. The thought and care that have gone into this book is staggering. Sure, it could wear thin pretty quick, but so far it's pure gold.
