Hawkeye #5 Review

Finally, Marvel has found the perfect series to tap into Matt Fraction's frantic, bizarre humor. Hawkeye is incredible; you know this because you have been buying and reading every issue. This month, we are treated to the conclusion to a two-part story and things get cray-cray. There's so much awesomeness contained within these pages that at times, it feels like your brain will explode and all that will be left is Hawkeye.

One of the best things about this issue – and the series in general – is the way Fraction structures it. It's disjointed, jumping forward and then backward in time. Hawkeye's inner dialogue is unsure and filled with contradiction. And the dialogue? Holy crap, the dialogue. It's funny, true to character, and so realistic that it's uncomfortable at times. Fraction is firing on all cylinders here; this is the book he was born to write.

Javier Pulido is on art duties again, and it's a somewhat mixed bag. It's better than last issue, and there are some really great moments, but it still feels a little off. His style works well for the series, he just doesn't quite click the way that David Aja did. It's not bad, but it is certainly not as good either. Some panels are just missing some attention to details. There's a lack of backgrounds, a lack of scenery and placement. This issue still looks good, just not as good as you would have hoped.

For Christmas, Benjamin would like a movie-quality Rocketeer costume and some original Dave Stevens artwork. Follow Benjamin on Twitter @616Earth, or find him on IGN.
