StarCraft II Highlights from IPL 5

If you’ve visited IGN in the last few days, you’ve probably seen the streams of IPL 5 built into the front page’s cover stories. In case you started watching but had no idea what was going on, here are the basics:  IPL 5 is a major competitive gaming event put on by IGN Pro League. In it, many of the world’s best players fight against each other for cash prizes in games of League of Legends and StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty.

With Day 3 of IPL 5 winding down, we have a much better idea of who might make it into the finals on Sunday December 2. If you haven’t been watching, here are some of the highlights from Day 3’s StarCraft II matches. If you’d like to know when the next round of matches start up, head over to the IPL schedule to see the times and matchups.

One of the most exciting series of IPL 5’s Day 3 StarCraft II matches was between DongRaeGu (Zerg) and Bomber (Terran). With both players facing elimination from IPL 5 if they lost the series, the matches got particularly interesting after DongRaeGu steamrolled over Bomber in game one. In game two, Bomber played much better and coordinated a bewildering series of Medivac drops to overwhelm DongRaeGu’s efforts.

Game three was the real highlight. After an uneventful start, Bomber was faced with an immaculate creep tumor spread by DongRaeGu and waves of mutalists and banelings. The resulting back-and-forth of battle continued nonstop until the match finally concluded with a huge clash between both armies.

And just so all the StarCraft II highlights aren’t solely Zerg and Terran, game two of the Her0 (Protoss) versus Sniper (Zerg) series was a showcase match for how to move and harass with a giant mass of mutalisks.

Of course the IPL StarCraft II tournament isn’t the only one going on. GSL competitions have also been taking place during the same event, alongside some world-class League of Legends matches like an exhausting 70ish minute brawl between WE and CLG EU (we'll have this live on the site as soon as we can). Check out the ongoing action over on IGN Pro League’s site.
