Swamp Thing #15 Review

Scott Snyder and Marco Rudy team up once again to bring us the newest installment of the Rotworld event in Swamp Thing #15. In a story that follows Holland and Arcane further down their respective rabbit holes, there’s a strong sense of connectivity between all eras of Swamp Thing lore.

The vector of Alec’s journey remains pretty level in this issue, as we follow him through a battle and into the desolate city of Gotham. There isn’t a ton of action to be found, but readers are treated to some sizable dramatic waves. Visually, the layouts divide the story into appealing, lumpy panels, but a color scheme that frequently fails to create appreciable contrast tends to muddy the layouts by allowing the panels to run together.

On the flip side of the tale, we join Anton Arcane in his place of power and learn some disturbing details about his plan. An entertaining conflict follows soon after Arcane makes his big reveal, reawakening a hero of considerable import. The big problem here – and throughout the issue – is that Rudy does not make the best use of establishing shots. The extreme close-ups comprising much of the book heighten the sense of terror, but the sporadic wide shots are inadequate in explaining context and physical relationships, allowing the swirling sensation of sustained close-up sequences to become confusing.

Swamp Thing #15 represents a necessary next step for the greater Rotworld storyline; however, readers should come in expecting more emotional drama than large set pieces. Snyder keeps things rolling along, and the substitution of one hero for another as the story progresses changes the story dynamics significantly.
