Sam Humphries continues to write Ultimate Comics Ultimates in the shadow of Jonathan Hickman’s glorious run on the title. While Humphries uses this issue to conclude all of Hickman’s story threads in order to start something new, there’s a sense that this title’s best days are behind it. This Point One issue does a lot of recapping and stage-setting with some decent art, but it fails to entertain you in the moment or get you pumped for what’s coming next.
This isn’t a horrible issue by any means, but there’s also nothing worth writing home about. You won’t laugh, you won’t cry, and you won’t be thrilled. Humphries attempts to offer an emotional climax, but it comes off more cheesy than anything else. It’s an okay story that lets you see Thor, Cap, and Iron Man in action fighting a big robot, so if that’s what you’re into then this issue will be worth your $2.99.
At the conception of the Ultimate universe, you got a sort of tingle every time a 616 element was introduced, but that novelty has long worn off and now the stories must stand on their own. The last page attempts to hook you with the debut of an element that was pretty cool in the 616 universe, but unfortunately the execution of the art doesn’t give it the necessary oomph. The culprit may be in the colors, which do little to properly enhance Dale Eaglesham’s pencils. That is a shame given the three powerful colors of that particular surprise.
