Comic Book Reviews for 3/6/13

It's been a long few weeks without a major event comic, so Marvel has finally stepped up to fill the void. All joking aside, the newly launched Age of Ultron is a fun and surprising way to launch into a big event, so hopefully the team can keep up the magic and keep the story going strong.

Over at DC, Batman deals with the death of his son, Scott Snyder ends his tenure on Swamp Thing, and Animal Man endures some tragedy of his own.

DC COMICS

Ame-Comi Girls #1

Written by Justin Gray & Jimmy Palmiotti | Art by Eduardo Francisco

"From my understanding, the purpose of DC's Ame-Comi Girls digital comics series is to offer a superhero series that can appeal to more of a female audience. Between the all-female cast and the manga-inspired visuals, you'd think that would be easy, right? Not so much. It's difficult to imagine who would find this series terribly appealing after reading the first print edition of Ame-Comi Girls, other than fans of superheroine T&A." -Jesse

Animal Man #18

Written by Jeff Lemire | Art by Steve Pugh

"Animal Man has the unfortunate luck of being released at a time where other popular DC titles are also killing off a main character. When this chapter is read as a graphic novel it will undoubtedly earn its full emotional impact, but right now as a comic fan it feels like I’m being kicked while I’m already down. If there’s a silver lining, it’s that Jeff Lemire delivers this particular heart-stomping with great skill." -Joshua

Before Watchmen: Rorschach #4

Written by Brian Azzarello | Art by Lee Bermejo

"I tried to come into each Before Watchmen series with an open mind, but I’ll admit that I had concerns that there was nowhere left to go with Rorschach that the original maxi-series hadn’t already gone. As Before Watchmen: Rorschach draws to a close, I have to say that it seems that this series was totally unnecessary." -Poet

Detective Comics #18

Written by John Layman | Art by Jason Fabok

"In Detective Comics #18, John Layman continues the story of the power struggle at the heart of the Penguin's illicit operations and I almost wish he hadn't. As the Penguin loses hold on his empire to his former assistant Ogilvy, who is now calling himself Emperor Penguin, one is left with the difficult task of attempting to take seriously a character who willingly chooses to go by the only moniker more laughable than the Penguin." -Melissa

Dial H #10

Written by China Mieville | Art by Alberto Ponticelli

"Sometimes I don't know what I'd do if DC didn't publish Dial H. This series is about as quirky as superhero books get, and it pretty much single handedly fills a void in the New 52 lineup as far as fun, "off the beaten path" titles go. China Mieville is still very slowly shedding light on what exactly the Dial is and how it works with this current storyline. And while there are many questions that need answering after issue #10, there is one significant reveal that alters the status quo and pushes Nelson's and Roxie's relationship to a new stage." -Jesse

Earth 2 #10

Written by James Robinson | Art by Nicola Scott

"If James Robinson’s Earth 2 is anything, it is consistent. It continues to introduce old characters with interesting new spins that make the book one of the most diverse of DC’s line. It also continues to deliver some of the hardest conversations to get through. The dialogue in this book is like a nice shirt completely wrinkled from being left in the dryer overnight; it would probably be great if someone took the time to iron it out." -Joshua

Green Arrow #18

Written by Jeff Lemire | Art by Andrea Sorrentino

"Last month’s re-relaunch of Green Arrow gave fans of the character a reason to hope again. This month, writer Jeff Lemire and artist Andrea Sorrentino prove that their new direction for the title has legs, as they ramp up the consequences and implications in Green Arrow #18." -Poet

Green Lantern #18

Written by Geoff Johns | Art by Various

"You know it’s the beginning of the end when Geoff Johns takes the usual “My name is Hal Jordan” spiel and darkly truncates it with “You know the rest...” While Simon Baz and Sinestro are very much still a part of this book, Hal Jordan firmly takes the reins back for what will be his final journey in Johns’ hands. Given how all three characters are trapped in the Dead Zone with little hope of getting out, this might just be Hal’s final journey altogether." -Joshua

Phantom Stranger #6

Written by J.M DeMatteis & Dan DiDio | Art by Zander Cannon & Gene Ha

"There's good news and bad news with the latest issue of Phantom Stranger. The bad news is that it's basically a filler issue. The Stranger takes a trip to Las Vegas this time around, and while it isn't necessarily a detour on his quest to discover the fate of his missing family, the overall plot only barely inches forward by the end. But bear in mind that this series has often struggled to be "important" at the expense of good, solid storytelling. All the character cameos have only worked to make this book feel less like a vital read and more a means to an end as far as pushing various pieces across the New 52 board. So a filler issue that slows down and explores the Stranger's relationship to some of DC's supernatural entities in greater detail isn't really such a bad thing." -Jesse

Stormwatch #18

Written by Peter Milligan | Art by Will Conrad

"On one hand, I love the big, unabashed spotlight Peter Milligan puts on DC’s premier gay couple. They flirt and bicker and get jealous just like anyone in a relationship might, which lends a nice personal touch to the epic stakes. On the other hand, their romance and the overall plot are corny as Kansas in August, which is only worsened by the Engineer doing her best Borg impersonation. The result is a story akin to eating a pack of Sweet Tarts: it might be kinda sweet, but it’ll leave you with a sour face by the end." -Joshua

Superman #17

Written by Scott Lobdell | Art by Kenneth Rocafort

"While Batman and Wonder Woman’s books are classics being born in front of our very eyes, Superman’s title suffers from a creative funk that has held it in a stranglehold since well before the New 52. It is a sad day when the world’s greatest super hero has a crossover event so poor that it provokes one line of criticism as cheesy as the event itself: what the H’El did I just read?" -Joshua

Swamp Thing #18

Written by Scott Snyder | Art by Yanick Paquette

"Though billed as a Rotworld epilogue, Swamp Thing #18 is more the true conclusion to that crossover storyline as Swamp Thing confronts the Arcane family one final time. This also happens to be Scott Snyder's final issue of the series. It actually functions better as a coda to Snyder's entire run than it does to Rotworld. Though enjoyable, the crossover ultimately felt too drawn out and meandering for its own good. Even though he was positioned as the big villain of the piece, Arcane feels like little more than an afterthought in issue #18. A lot of Rotworld has proved to be more of a means to an end as far as Swamp Thing is concerned." -Jesse

Worlds' Finest #10

Written by Paul Levitz | Art by Kevin Maguire

"In Worlds' Finest #10, writer Paul Levitz puts the main Michael Holt storyline on hold to take a brief detour to Gotham in the wake of Batman Incorporated #8. The book begins with our two heroines dealing with the previous issue's events in the best way they know how -- Huntress is cool, calm, and collected as she tries to get to the bottom of what exactly is going on with Mister Terrific and Power Girl blows off some steam by recklessly wreaking havoc on Holt Industries facilities." -Melissa
