Wonder Woman Gears Up for the New Gods

A new story arc launches in April's Wonder Woman #19, and we got a chance to chat with series writer Brian Azzarello about what fans can expect as our hero clashes with the New Gods and where the series is headed.

IGN Comics: So, Wonder Woman #19 is the start of a new arc. Is this continuing the long-form story you guys are telling or is this a good place for new readers to jump on?

Brian Azzarello: It's going to be both, of course. Yeah, we are telling a long-form story here, but this is a good place if you want to jump on. We're gonna see some major upheavals in the world that we have created for her. This is a great place to get a front row seat and watch it happen. The character we have been building with the First Born, he will come crashing in.

IGN: Wonder Woman seems to have her own little section carved out of the DC Universe. Can we expect that to continue or will this title start to join up more with the DCU proper?

Azzarello: We are going to keep telling the Wonder Woman story. The rest of the DCU is doing a good job of establishing itself, we are worried about establishing Wonder Woman's world and also introducing Orion and the New Gods.

IGN: Are we going to see more of the New Gods soon?

Azzarello: In this new arc, yes, we will.

IGN: How much of the classic New Gods storylines are you drawing from? Or is this something completely new?

Azzarello: It'll be different. It won't be completely new, no, but it will be different. Remember, we are dealing with the New 52 here, so there's different interpretations of the characters being done here.

IGN: So for fans of the New Gods that haven't been following this series, can they jump right in with this new arc and enjoy it?

Azzarello: I think so! It would help if you knew what was going on in her world, you'd enjoy the story more, but hey, that's what the collections are for. They look great on your bookshelf.

IGN: There's been some discussion that your Wonder Woman seems to differ greatly from the Wonder Woman we see in some of the other DC books. Do you try to line up the work you are doing in her solo title with the work being done in various team books at all?

Azzarello: In her core book, in Wonder Woman, that's where she has the most room for character development. In some of these other books she has been in, you know, she's a supporting character. In Justice League, Geoff [Johns] doesn't have any kind of room to do the kind of character beats I do. He's got, what seven or eight other characters that he's got to give face time to?

I don't particularly see that they are acting differently. When Geoff has questions about motivations or different points of view that she would have, he reaches out to me. He consults me as far as issues about her personality. I think that everybody's on the same page.

IGN: So with the New Gods, since you are the first creator introducing them into the New 52, are you confined in a lot of ways to what came before or are you allowed to really put a major spin on them?

Azzarello: Allowed? Try encouraged. The New Gods thing has been a part of our plan since before we started Wonder Woman. We knew we where going to introduce Orion at the end of the first year and then slowly bring in more of the New Gods mythos in the second year, along with more of her family.

Everything right now is going according to plan and the stuff that we have planned, as far as the New Gods and New Genesis, it will be different than what you have seen before. This is not to say that we are showing any sort of disrespect for [Jack] Kirby, because we are not. It's kind of looking at this from a different perspective.

IGN: With Wonder Woman's supporting cast growing so large, is there chance for spin-offs of any kind?

Azzarello: What, you want a Strife mini-series? I'd be there in a heartbeat. But, those characters are open. I've let editors of other books know that they can take them. I've established them and built them and if somebody else wants to use them, then yeah, take them. This is what the gods are like now, so they can put them in other books looking like that now.

IGN: It feels like the Wonder Woman title is heading towards something big. Is there an ending to this story, or is this a world that you can just pass to another creative team?

Azzarello: I'm gonna have to hand it off at some point, but we have an ending to the story that we are telling. We are working towards a point in the road. Whether we go beyond that, we'll see. Right now, we know the issue number where we are going to be done.

We are having a great time. We love this character, and being able to do something dynamic with her has been rewarding. Cliff, Tony, the whole team. It's really great.
