Kick-Ass 2, R.I.P.D. and 2 Guns Showcased at CinemaCon

Three different comic books serve as the basis for some of Universal's biggest film releases this summer: Kick-Ass 2, R.I.P.D. and 2 Guns. All three movies were part of Universal's presentation today at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, where the studio showcased their summer 2013 slate to theater executives, distributors, and press. IGN was on hand for the studio's presentation.

The studio showed slightly extended red band trailers for both Kick-Ass 2 and 2 Guns, but there really wasn't anything new that IGN readers wouldn't have already seen in the trailers released for both films. 2 Guns debuts August 2, while Kick-Ass 2 opens August 16.

R.I.P.D. was a different story as we got our first look at never-before-seen footage from the film, which is based on the Dark Horse comic of the same name. The film, directed by Red's Robert Schwentke, follows a recently deceased cop (Ryan Reynolds) who becomes a member of the Rest in Peace Department, the afterlife's security force to protect the living from the malevolent dead. Reynolds is partnered with a rootin', tootin' Western lawman played by Jeff Bridges as a sort of cross between his True Grit character Rooster Cogburn and Yosemite Sam.

Universal showed an extended and yet to be released trailer for it. The film definitely has the tone and feel of a Men in Black movie crossed with the supernatural comedy of a Ghostbusters, with a bit of the '80s cult classic Dead Heat thrown in there as well. Mary-Louise Parker basically plays the Rip Torn to Reynolds and Bridges' Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones if you will.

Reynolds has to not only accept that he's now dead, but also figure out just how being a lawman for the afterlife works. That's where his partner and mentor Bridges comes in. Armed with their blasters as sidearms (which can neutralize the evil dead, no pun intended), these two supernatural cops hunt down their prey in our world all the while seen by the living as an old Asian man and a hot blonde woman.

The film looks quite charming and fun, so if you've been disappointed by the last two MIB films then R.I.P.D. should be the antidote for you. It opens July 19.
