Provo, Utah Becomes Third U.S. City to Get Google Fiber

A little over a week after announcing that Austin would become the second city in the Google Fiber roll-out, it looks like another American locale will get the high speed Internet treatment. In their official blog, Google announced that Provo, Utah will be the third U.S. city involved in the Google Fiber program.

"We believe the future of the Internet will be built on gigabit speeds, and we’re sure the businesses and residents of Provo already have some good ideas for what they’d build with a gig," Google Fiber GM Kevin Lo wrote in the blog post announcing the partnership.

Instead of completely building a fiber network from scratch, Google will be purchasing iProvo, a municipal fiber-optic network that began all the way back in 2004. Provoans will have the option of accessing the company's free Internet (with a speed of 5mbps) as well as Google Fiber Gigabit Internet and TV services. Google will also provide free service to public institutions in the Provo area.

The plan isn't set in stone just yet: Google's proposal must be cleared by the Provo City Council in a meeting on April 23rd.

"We intend to begin the network upgrades as soon as the closing conditions are satisfied and the deal is closed," Lo wrote.
