Following on from the international success of Oblivion, Tom Cruise has plans to stay in sci-fi mode by starring in Yukikaze, an ambitious film based on the series of novels by Chohei Kambayashi.
Deadline reports that Warner Bros. will finance and distribute the project, while Erwin Stoff and Tom Lassally will produce having previously worked with both Warner Bros. and Cruise on All You Need Is Kill. Also joining them as a producer is Viz Media's Jason Hoffs.
Yukikaze takes place in the early 21st Century, thirty years after the world was invaded by an alien force when a dimensional gateway appeared over Antarctica. After initially being overwhelmed, the movie follows the retaliatory efforts of humans as they form a special combat force to remove the alien threat. An anime series based on the books was released between 2002 and 2005.
There's no word on when the movie will be released but, seeing as Cruise still has another Mission: Impossible in the works as well as the sequel to Jack Reacher (possibly), don't expect to see it any time soon.
Oblivion is out in the UK now, and will hit US screens from Friday. Not sure whether to go see it or not? Check out our review.
