IGN recently caught up with Neill Blomkamp to discuss his forthcoming movie Elysium, and while we’ll be running that content nearer the film’s release, we can let you know what he had to say regarding another couple of sci-fi projects.
First up is District 10, the potential sequel to sci-fi smash District 9. Stating that he has a great idea for the movie, Blomkamp explained: “I really want to make a District 9 sequel. I genuinely do. The problem is I have a bunch of ideas and stuff that I want to make. I’m relatively new to this – I’m about to make my third film, and now the pattern that I’m starting to realise is very true is that you lock yourself into a film beyond the film you’re currently working on. But it just doesn’t work for me.
“I don’t know if it works for other directors, but the amount of ideas and the amount of different places I want to go through the duration of making one film, means that I have no idea what else I want to do during that process. I only know at the end. So if I say I want to make District 10, and then I have 50 ideas while I’m making [next film] Chappie, and when I get to the end I don’t want to make it, it’s not a good place to be at. But I know I want to make District 10 at some point.”
You can read our most recent Chappie update here, but what of Star Wars? Blomkamp has made his name in science-fiction, and with a new trilogy planned as well as a series of spin-off features, he would seem like an ideal directing choice. But when asked the question, he stated... “No. I don’t think so. I love Star Wars. I really, really love Star Wars. But I’m not the right guy. And also, just taking ideas that already exist in Hollywood is just not for me.”
As for the future of film – with phrases like ‘transmedia’ and ‘multiplatform storytelling’ being bandied about of late – Blomkamp believes that the way in which we consume entertainment will soon evolve.
“I think that the experience of ingesting narrative storytelling in an interactive way that hasn’t yet been done is the way that entertainment is going,” he explained. “Films end up on shelves like books are now. There are like books up there, and kids are watching films. And soon it’s going to be films up there, and kids playing games. And the evolution is that there will be a non-passive narrative version of interacting with whatever the story is in a way that just hasn’t been done yet. That’s what’s coming I think.”
So do you agree? And would you like to see a District 9 sequel? Let us know in the comments, and check out the awesome Elysium trailer below.
