PopCap has announced that Plants vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time will hit iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch worldwide on July 18th. The game will be free-to-play with upgrades and in-game items available for purchase, though PopCap notes that “players can face every zombie and access every level in every world at no cost.”
According to PopCap, Plants vs. Zombies 2 “continues the epic struggle of plants defending your brainz against zombies from your backyard through the vast reaches of time, both past and future.” The game offers “dozens” of new levels and multiple themed worlds, plus new plants and new zombies along with “all-new touch-screen power-ups that enable players to ‘break the fourth wall’ and interact with zombies directly, as well as via plant defenses.”
Worlds confirmed so far include Ancient Egypt, Pirate Seas and the Wild West. PopCap also notes that merchant Crazy Dave will also return, offering “special plant upgrades and other tools and weapons.” Players will also be able to obtain plant food that “supercharges” plants.
“We’re confident that players will see the love and attention we’ve put into this game,” senior producer Allen Murray. “We’ve created wild new ways to experience the plants and zombies you know and love as well as packing the game with tons of completely new content, and we’re still hard at work coming up with even more cool stuff that will keep Plants vs. Zombies 2 fresh and evolving in the months and years following launch.”
A Plants Vs. Zombies sequel was announced last year, and PopCap confirmed its title in May. Last week, PopCap teased a Plants vs. Zombies crossover with Mass Effect and Dead Space, though it’s currently unknown if that will tie into Plants vs. Zombies 2.
Expect more information on Plants vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time to come from E3 next week, along with impressions of the game from IGN. EA will hold its E3 2013 press conference on Monday, June 10th at 1:00 p.m. Pacific, so expect any other big announcements to come then.
