The Avengers #13 Review

With the little children abducted by the High Evolutionary last issue, the Avengers -- including parental figures Hyperion and Thor -- must rescue them. You heard right, this issue continues directly from the previous one, giving us some much-wanted sense of continuity. Even better, we get to see Hyperion developed in an intriguing way. Trust me when I say that Marvel’s Superman has never been more compelling.

Mike Deodato turns in yet another strong effort, nary an error to be found. Did you check out those eyebeams on Hyperion? Yikes! Superman has his heat vision, but it’s never looked as impressive as what Hyperion has going on here. Deodato sets it up, but it’s Frank Martin’s explosive coloring that truly sell it. Everything else is top notch, too, including epic images of Thor calling down the lightning, Spider-Man and Spider-Woman tangling with some beasts, and even a subtle note of humor.

Nick Spencer joins Jonathan Hickman on writing duties for this issue. Truth be told, I couldn’t even tell that he was on this issue. That’s a good thing, right? It’s always hard to tell which parts came from which writer in these types of situations, but the good news is the the dialogue hits hard, the pacing is great, and the message of this two-part story rings loud and clear by the end. This series has admittedly been hit or miss for me because it’s being told in such a disjointed manner, but this is definitely a chapter I can get behind.

Joshua writes for IGN. He can’t wait for Man of Steel so he can finally see how Superman shaves. Follow him on Twitter or IGN.
