Nintendo Blocks Smash Bros Melee Streaming at Evo

Nintendo has denied the Evo 2013 fighting tournament permission to broadcast Super Smash Bros. Melee. The news comes via an update to Shoryuken, which notes that “Regrettably, we’ve just been informed by Nintendo of America Inc. that we do not have permission to broadcast Super Smash Bros. Melee for Evo 2013.”

As a result of the news, the Evo stream schedule has been changed -- now replaced by King of Fighters XIII and Persona 4 Arena -- and the scheduled Finals time for Smash, KOF and Persona have been changed. “Our apologies to Smash players and fans,” Shoryuken added along with the new schedule.

The news is especially harsh since fans raised nearly $95,000 in donations to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation earlier this year to allow Smash to be included in the tournament. Nintendo’s streaming block follows its decision to enforce copyright on YouTube videos in May.

We’ve reached out to Nintendo about its decision and will update this story with any comment we receive.
