Dakota Johnson Up for Lead in 50 Shades of Grey

Casting on Sam Taylor-Johnson's adaptation of E L James' novel 50 Shades of Grey is pressing forward with less than a year to go until Universal Pictures' scheduled release date. It's already been confirmed that the helmer's husband, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, will not in fact be playing the male lead Christian Grey.

The Wrap now reports that Dakota Johnson (21 Jump Street) is up for the role of Anastasia Steele, the coveted female lead in the film. Daughter of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, Johnson began as a model and has since transitioned in to acting with small, but notable, roles in films such as The Social Network. She has since landed a leading role on television's Ben and Kate and is currently in production on Need for Speed alongside Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul.

The adaptation of what began as erotic Twilight Saga fan fiction is, by all accounts, being given an elevated adaptation with Taylor-Johnson (Nowhere Boy) set to direct from a script by Kelly Marcel (Saving Mr. Banks). The role of Anastasia Steele is said to be potentially "star making."

We will keep you updated as details emerge.
