In a conversation with IGN, Sony’s President of Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, discussed Gran Turismo 6, specifically addressing a question on whether gamers can expect GT6 to migrate from PlayStation 3 to Vita. This is an especially pertinent question since series creator Kazanori Yamauchi already noted that Gran Turismo 6 is "in mind" for PlayStation 4.
“The PS Vita is a very powerful portable system,” Yoshida told IGN, “but not quite as powerful as PS3. As you can tell looking at GT6, it really is using PS3 to a very high level. So it’s going to be really hard to move GT6 onto PS Vita.”
Yoshida noted that games are becoming more “service-oriented,” pointing to the long-term success of Gran Turismo 5, PlayStation 3’s best-selling exclusive title with over 10 million units sold. He therefore feels like series creator Kazanori Yamauchi’s assertion that GT6 would come to PS4 eventually is “natural” as Polyphony Digital acclimates itself with Sony’s new hardware, and as Gran Turismo 6 itself begins its long lifecycle.
“But in terms of PS Vita support, I don’t expect the whole game to be able to run on PS Vita. So there’s no clear plans right now that we can talk about.” Rather, Gran Turismo 6 goodness may instead come to Vita if and when PS4 runs the game, since it will therefore be playable via Remote Play.
Hopefully, we’ll learn more about further plans for Gran Turismo on Vita – perhaps in the form of a separate or trimmed-down game – in the future. In the meantime, you can expect Gran Turismo 6 to finally launch on PlayStation 3 worldwide on December 6th.
