CBS and Hulu Unite (Kinda)

The weary battle rages on as CBS and Hulu announce a non-exclusive, multi-year licensing agreement to stream certain shows through Hulu's subscription service.

While CBS is still not offering any of its new series for streaming, they are allowing access to more than 2,600 episodes from their library series such as Medium, Numb3rs and CSI: Miami, as well as other classics like Star Trek, I Love Lucy and The Twilight Zone.

The agreement marks another baby step for Hulu and CBS, the only network still not offering new programs on Hulu. The two companies forged a similar deal last year for Japan, granting Hulu Plus members access to some of its older shows.

"CBS has a long history of producing truly great TV. Hulu Plus subscribers are entertainment lovers who spend their time watching shows they love, versus shows they might only just like," said Andy Forssell, Senior VP of Content for Hulu. Those two facts make for a fantastic combination, because this collection of CBS titles are shows that people revere and that really matter to fans of great TV like our subscribers."

CBS content will begin to appear on Hulu Plus in January 2013 and over the following months.

NYCC: Dynamite Nabs the Grimm License

Police procedurals and crime shows are a dime a dozen on TV these days. Grimm broke from the pack by offering a new twist on a familiar formula. The show centers around Detective Nick Burkhardt, who discovers that he is a member of a line of defenders called Grimm who protect the world from mystical creatures known as Wesen. The show features characters inspired by Grimm's Fairy Tales and similar stories.

Evidently NBC felt the time was right to expand the Grimm franchise beyond the confines of network TV. At NYCC today, Dynamite Entertainment announced that they've acquired the rights to produce comics and graphic novels based on Grimm. Grimm joins various other licensed properties at Dynamite, including Flash Gordon, The Lone Ranger, Green Hornet, and Voltron.

"The opportunity to delve even deeper into the Grimm universe is an exciting prospect. One we hope fans of the show and comic books in general will equally enjoy." said Executive Producers David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf in Dynamite's press release. "The medium will allow the story to go places we never could within the constraints of a television production. It's pretty cool."

Meanwhile, Dynamite President Nick Barrucci said, "Grimm is one of the hottest new genre shows on TV. We had asked NBC numerous times since Season One about licensing this great TV show as a Dynamite comic. They weren't ready to license in the first year, as they were still building the mythology. The second they opened up the license for proposals we offered an aggressive creative, financial, and marketing plan. Fans of the TV show will enjoy what we have in store and how the comics will complement the TV series."

Dynamite hasn't revealed what form these new comics might take or which creators will be tapped to produce them. It should be interesting to see how the Grimm comics compare to current fairy tale-inspired series like Bill Willingham's Fables and Zenescope's Grimm Fairy Tales franchise. We'll keep you updated as Dynamite releases more information.

Sons of Anarchy: "Laying Pipe" Review

Note: Full spoilers for the episode follow.

Like most shows with a big cast and a ton of storylines going on at the same time, Sons of Anarchy is usually busy jumping from plot to plot, making sure that everything is moving forward. This week’s episode, “Laying Pipe”, directed by former guest star Adam Arkin, was more focused, which set the right tone considering the significance of what happened. There’s a spoiler warning at the top of this review, but this is another warning: if you haven’t seen the episode yet and don't want to be spoiled, go watch it and come back here afterwards.

Let’s discuss the less heartbreaking items first. First up: Gemma’s bad day. If trying to undermine Tara by working with Wendy wasn’t bad enough, pretending to Tara that she hadn’t tipped Wendy off ended up making Gemma look a tiny bit silly. As Gemma herself pointed out, Tara is the smart one. And then there was the fight with the prostitute (Ashley Tisdale) who was with Clay at Nero’s. Clay’s sly smile confirmed that this was exactly what he was going for; it was disappointing to see Gemma gave him what he wanted.

Of course, all of this was completely in character for Gemma, who has been known to go off half-cocked when things get her riled up. Katey Sagal put a great tone into all of her lines, especially with Tara (“Where is this sad song going?”). Even when she knew she didn’t have a leg to stand on, she was feisty. Tara’s declaration that she loved Gemma but wouldn’t put up with this was the perfect response. My question is how long Nero is going to be ok with the chaos that accompanies Gemma everywhere. Their discussion afterward was another example of the great chemistry between Sagal and Jimmy Smits; the ease they have with each other makes it fun to watch the relationship unfold.

It was just last week that I was looking forward to seeing what would happen when Clay and Nero met up, and I got my wish pretty quickly here in just the third episode of the season. I should have known that Nero would be cool as a cucumber, unwilling to let Clay get him worked up. Although there was no violence between Gemma’s men so far, I think Nero will prove to be more than capable of holding his own if Clay decides to take him on.

After all the angst with Juice last season, it was like a breath of fresh air to see him more lighthearted again. In this episode Theo Rossi brought out the humor every chance he got, and it was a great way of easing some of the tension from the other storylines. Juice’s reluctance to take Clay to Nero’s was cute, but it was when Carla called him “white trash” and he made the correction that he was Puerto Rican that made me laugh out loud. It was good to see the old Juice back.

Diana was too sad to write a funny caption this week

And now to the heart of the episode – what happened to Jax and the other three Sons in county lockup. To start, Harold Perrineau and Charlie Hunnam’s scenes together were great. They started off on unequal footing, with Jax trying to keep things from spinning out of control. The change in Jax by the end of the episode was profound, and Pope recognized it right away.

Charlie Hunnam and Ryan Hurst also made the most of their time together in this episode. As glad as I was to see the heart to heart where Jax came clean about the events of last season, I knew it didn’t bode well for Opie. But even if we could sense it coming, it didn’t make it any less painful to watch that scene unfold. It was brutal, made more so by Opie’s resignation and Jax’s horrified reaction. Sons of Anarchy has a history of being unafraid to show shocking violence and this was no exception.

Opie (and Hurst) will be missed. The impact on Jax was immediate. He was already struggling to keep things together and it will only be more difficult without Opie as backup and moral compass. The way he “held court” at the end with Chibs and Tig showed us the change in him as he used Tig to solidify his control of SAMCRO. If I had a complaint about the episode, it was that I wanted to see the conversation when Jax called Tara in the end. We got to see Jax’s reaction to what happened to Opie, how it affected his dealings with Pope, and how he dealt with Chibs and Tig. When the scene ended without showing us how Jax explained things to Tara, it felt like we were missing something. Maybe they will give us some of the fallout in the episodes to come, we will have to see.

Homeland, Breaking Bad, Louis CK Nab Emmys

Look, no one ever accused the Primetime Emmy Awards of being overly in touch with the absolute best in TV, but they do nominate a ton of great shows and actors. It's the actual voting for, and then handing out of, the awards they seem to have trouble with. I'm mostly speaking here to to their penchant for rewarding the same shows year after year. Tonight, at the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards, we got a few pleasant surprises, but a lot of boring "same ol' same ol'."

Sometimes this works out in our favor here at IGN TV. Bryan Cranston's won three Emmy's for his portrayal of Walter White on Breaking Bad. But not this year (or last year because he wasn't eligible). Homeland's Damian Lewis took home for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, upstaging both favorites Cranston and Mad Men's Jon Hamm. Likewise, though more of a sure bet, Homeland's Claire Danes won for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. At that point, it was almost a given that Homeland would win Best Drama series, which it did. Causing many fans of Breaking Bad's electrifying Season 4 to cry foul. That being said, Homeland is a still a fantastic drama and the win gave Showtime its first ever Emmy-winning series.

Breaking Bad didn't walk away empty handed though. Cranston might not have won, but Aaron Paul took home the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor for his Season 4 role as Jesse Pinkman (bitch!). In the comedy category, Modern Family, usually the odds-on favorite these days, swept up most of the wins; with trophies for Eric Stonestreet, Julie Bowen and one for Outstanding Comedy Series. Veep's Julia Louis-Dreyfus took home the prize for Outstanding Lead Actress in a comedy, besting the likes of Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Girl's Lena Dunham.

The hilarious Louis CK didn't go home empty handed, winning Emmys for writing on FX's Louie and one for writing his live variety special "Louis C.K. Live at the Beacon Theatre." Meanwhile, The Daily Show won its 10th (!!!) consecutive Emmy for Outstanding Variety Series. In the Movie/Miniseries category (with a very loose interpretation of what constitutes a miniseries), the statues mostly went to HBO's Game Change, History's Hatfields & McCoys and movie stars Julianne Moore and Kevin Costner - with one American Horror Story win for Jessica Lange's performance as Constance.

But for those of you bummed about your favorite shows losing out, there's a silver lining. Both Adult Swim's Childrens Hospital and Cartoon Network's Regular Show won Emmys too. So cheer up!

Fall 2012 TV Preview

Well, it's here. The beast has arrived. With the premiere of the new season of Doctor Who last weekend, Fall TV is officially upon us - on the heels of shows like Grimm that went the extra step of debuting in August! So now it's time to get out a pad of paper, a sharpie, some duct tape, a protractor and some wood glue and map out your own person viewing/DVRing schedule. And we're here to help!

So please welcome back Dexter Morgan, Nucky Thompson, Carrie Matheson, Jax Teller, Olivia Dunham, John Reese, Amanda Clarke Emily Thorne, Jeff Winger, Leslie Knope, Liz Lemon, Sheldon Cooper, Barney Stinson, The Doctor, Schmidt, Cartman and, um, American Horror Story monster... guy. But if you know Fall TV, then you know that it's not just about the returning favorites. Oh no. There's an avalanche of new shows waiting to tumble down on top of your heads; like a nuclear sub drama from The Shield's Shawn Ryan, a post-global blackout adventure series from J.J. Abrams and Jon Favreau, and new NBC comedies from folks like Glee/American Horror Story's Ryan Murphy and Jimmy Fallon.

There will be plenty of familiar faces too. Friends' Matthew Perry returns to NBC with Go On, Lost's Terry O'Quinn is back on ABC with 666 Park Avenue and The Office's Mindy Kaling's got her own new show on FOX called The Mindy Project. A few long-running shows will also come to an end as The Office returns for its 9th (!!!) and final season, FOX's Fringe wraps up its run with 13 exciting, Observer-filled episodes and Liz and Jack say goodbye on 30 Rock's 13-episode farewell.

So here's your rundown. Spotlight shows first, in order of premiere date. Then a full list at the end, on the last page of the feature. There's a system.

Doctor Who

Network: BBC America

Airs: Saturdays at 9pm

Premiere: 9/8/12

Going into Season 7, the big question is just how Amy Pond and Rory Williams will depart the series. The fall run of the show is a short one, with just five episodes (the rest of Season 7 will air next year), culminating in Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill leaving Doctor Who behind. But will they get a happy ending?

Fans are also extra curious about this year’s Christmas special, which was said to introduce the Doctor’s new companion, played by Jenna-Louise Coleman. Of course this past weekend, the season premiere threw a curve ball at us in regards to that...

Robot Chicken

Network: Adult Swim

Airs: Sundays at Midnight

Premiere: 9/9/12

Season 6 of Robot Chicken kicks off with the Robot Chicken DC Comics Special, with Seth Green as Batman, Robin and Aquaman, Neil Patrick Harris as Two-Face, Alfred Molina as Lex Luthor, Nathan Fillion as the Green Lantern, Megan Fox as Lois Lane, Breckin Meyer as Superman – in a parody of all things Justice League, Super Friends and more.

The remainder of Season 6 will feature a ton of ever-impressive guest voices, including Elizabeth Banks, Sarah Chalke, Kat Dennings, Sam Elliott, Ben Foster, Whoopi Goldberg, Lucas Grabeel, Megan Hilty, Gillian Jacobs, Robert Kirkman, Zachary Levi, J.B. Smoove, Liev Schreiber, Jon Stewart, Patrick Stewart, Stanly Tucci, Olivia Wilde, and Alex Winter.

Go On

Network: NBC

Airs: Tuesdays at 9pm

Premiere: 9/11/12

After airing a special preview of its pilot episode after their Olympics coverage a few weeks ago, NBC has high hopes for its new Matthew Perry comedy, Go On. Perry, after failing with ABC's Mr. Sunshine back in 2010, is back in semi-Chandler mode, playing a sportscaster who joins a support group to help him grieve for the recent death of his wife. Yes, the premise sounds a bit dark, but given that Perry's Ryan King finds himself surrounded by a multi-ethnic, multi-generational cast of kooky characters, it's clear that NBC's trying to pull from Community's Column A and create a show that has a chance of reaching a broader audience. Laura Benati, Julie White, Brett Gelman and John Cho also star.

Check out IGN's review of Go On's pilot episode here!

The New Normal

Network: NBC

Airs: Tuesdays at 9:30pm

Premiere: 9/11/12

From Ryan Murphy, creator of Glee and American Horror Story, and Ali Adler comes a new NBC comedy about a gay couple (Justin Bartha and Andrew Rannells) and the woman, Goldie (Georgia King), acting as the surrogate for their baby. Ellen Barkin is on hand to provide some Archie Bunker-inspired homophobia as Goldie's grandma while Real Housewives of Atlanta/Glee's NeNe Leaks provides enough sass to put grandma in her place. Murphy has found enormous success with risky, off-kilter TV, so will he reign supreme over the realm of half-hour comedies as well?

Check out IGN's review The New Normal's pilot episode here!

Sons of Anarchy

Network: FX

Airs: Tuesdays at 10pm

Premiere: 9/11/12

How will things go for Jax, now that he’s taken over as president of SAMCRO? We’re guessing it won't be smooth sailing…

Season 5 will bring two major new players in, including Harold Perrineau (Lost) as a new antagonist, Damon Pope, who's transitioned from being a drug kingpin to running a legitimate empire. Jimmy Smits also joins the cast, trading in his usual suit-wearing characters to play Latino gang leader Nero Padilla – someone described as becoming a “dangerous mentor” to Jax.

The X Factor

Network: FOX

Airs: Wednesdays at 8pm

Premiere: 9/12/12

Arriving with a ton of hype last year, Simon Cowell’s US version of his smash hit UK reality series did… fine, but notably wasn't nearly as big as American Idol. That being the case, the second season will see some major overhauls, with judges Paula Abdul, Nicole Scherzinger and host Steve Jones all gone. The new judges are Demi Lovato and Britney Spears and yes, Lovato’s young age is a bit of an eyebrow raiser, given her role as a judge and mentor. But that’s overshadowed by the media attention bringing Spears onto the show is achieving. Given Spears’ own troubles through the years, many are curious to see just how she handles this role on The X Factor – but are they curious enough to give the show a ratings boost?

Guys With Kids

Network: NBC

Airs: Wednesdays at 8:30pm

Premiere: 9/12/12

The brain child baby of Late Night's Jimmy Fallon, Guys with Kids features Jesse Bradford (Swimfan), Anthony Anderson (Law & Order) and Zach Cregger (Whitest Kids U' Know) as dads. Wait! I mean dudes with infants. No, wait. Sorry, we'll get it right some day. But if you're a fan of guys being dumb with not only their kids, but their spouses as well, then saddle up, put some silly sunglasses on your toddler and act like an idiot in front of your hot wife who you probably don't deserve.

Glee

Network: FOX

Airs: Thursdays at 9pm

Premiere: 9/13/12

It’s always a struggle for a TV series that begins in a high school setting to then transition into something else when the characters graduate. Glee is going about this dilemma in an interesting (and risky) manner, having had some of the characters graduate last season – but not all. Storylines will now apparently take place in New York, where Rachel and Kurt live, but also back at McKinley, with the characters who have not graduated, plus some new students. And there’s also some of the other graduates to deal with as well, who are living in various cities. All of which certainly sounds... crowded.

J.J. Abrams' global  blackout, NBC's Thursday night comedies and Nucky Thompson's prohibition-era Atlantic City on page 2...

Apple Patents Game Controller

An Apple patent published today shows Apple may be making a game controller, or at least using an iPhone as a universal remote to pair NFC devices.

The controller seems to interact with an Apple TV - which can currently mirror iOS and Mountain Lion-enabled games over AirPlay. It's yet to be seen whether this controller would interact with only mirrored games or if the Apple TV may be getting comprehensive app and game support in a future update.

The patent shows a controller that has more than a passing resemblance of the Playstation's DualShock, but the design is certain to change in production.

NFC is also on board, allowing you to pair your controllers by tapping devices together. This all but confirms the wireless technology will be coming to Apple products, like the New iPhone, which already supports credit card storage and  in iOS 6 through an app called PassBook.

A vast section of today's patent shows an iPhone using NFC to pair with entertainment consoles. An iPhone is shown interacting with an Xbox 360, DVD player, and home theater.

We've reached out to Apple for comment who has yet to comment. We will update as we know more.
