Marvel Unveils All-Female Fearless Defenders

Teased in a new teaser a couple of weeks back, Marvel has unveiled its latest title, an all-female superhero series called Fearless Defenders, written by Cullen Bunn with art from Will Sliney. The series will star Valkyrie and Misty Knight as well as introduce some new female characters to the Marvel Universe. Following Fear Itself, Bunn was one of the writers that tackled the enjoyable follow-up series called Fear Itself: The Fearless which, perhaps not surprisingly, featured Valkyrie in a prominent role.

In an interview with Newsarama, Bunn said, "You've got Misty, who's a very street-level character. And you've got Valkyrie, who's a goddess. So you've got very different backgrounds, and I think they will see their potential teammates very differently, and I think you'll see that the two of them have some differences of opinion on who would be the right team for what they're going to be facing."

He added, "This will also be a book that gives us a great opportunity to showcase the women of the Marvel Universe. You'll be seeing a lot of characters in the book who may not necessarily be in the core team, but will have the opportunity to guest-star and rotate into the book."

Bunn also revealed that Dani Moonstar will be another member of this new Defenders team, though the entire team won't be present right out of the gate in issue #1.  The writer also coyly dodged a question about the possible inclusion of the Wasp, who was recently brought back in the pages of The Avengers, so take that for what it's worth.

For more on the Fearless Defenders, head on over to Newsarama.

Robopocalypse Author to Develop Amped

Robopocalypse author Daniel H. Wilson is now in final negotiations to develop his best-selling thriller Amped for Working Title Films.

The project was originally set up at Summit, but the property's rights were lost over the course of the studio's merger with Lionsgate.

Set in the near future, the story of Amped takes place in a world where nano tech-enhanced humans and ordinary humans are at war with one another.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Alex Proyas (The Crow, Dark City, I, Robot) is attached to helm the feature.

Meanwhile, Wilson's Robopocalypse is getting the big screen treatment from director Steven Spielberg, with a release date set for Summer 2014.

Ghosts #1 Review

Ghosts is Vertigo's latest seasonally appropriate anthology issue. As the simple title suggests, the various stories in this book explore the concept of ghosts from a variety of angles, some much more literal than others. While every Vertigo anthology has at least some worthwhile material, they also ask a lot of readers with the $8 cover price. Luckily, in terms of both the creative talent involved and the quality of the stories, Ghosts is one of Vertigo's better efforts.

The obvious headliner of this issue is Ghost for Hire, a joint effort between Geoff Johns and Jeff Lemire and one that makes a strong case for why Johns should venture outside of the DC Universe more often. It's a fun, charming tale that could just as easily be placed in an all-ages anthology. The other highly significant entry in the issue is Joe Kubert's The Boy and the Old Man. While visually rough since Kubert wasn't able to do more than layout the story before his death, the story is a very heartfelt and engaging look at an elderly, terminally ill man fighting to protect his grandson. It's difficult not to read a deeper significance to the story given Kubert's unfortunate passing.

Plenty of other strong material rounds out the issue. Paul Pope and David Lapham team for a sci-fi pirate epic called Treasue Lost. Here the ghost theme is at its most tenuous, but who cares when it allows Pope to do more of the surreal, creative storytelling he excels at. Gilbert Hernandez's The Dark Lady is an initially somber read that takes a fun turn towards the end. Al Ewing and Rufus Dayglo's The Night After I Took the Data Entry Job I was Visited By My Own Ghost may be obnoxiously titled, but it offers a fun twist on the "Ghost of Christmas Future" formula.

There are a few missteps here, to be sure. The Dead Boy Detectives in 'Run Ragged is enjoyable and visually diverse, but it ends abruptly and encourages readers to wait for the next Vertigo anthology for a continuation of the story. Amy Reeder's art is a highlight in Wallflower, but the idea of two lovers becoming metaphorical ghosts to each other sort of fizzles out by the end. The only story I actively disliked, though, was Bride. Though it too boasts some strong visuals, the storytelling was pointlessly obtuse and the main characters thoroughly unlikable.

Yes, $8 is lot to ask for any comic, but Ghosts offers a wealth of content, and quality content at that.

NHL 13 Update Switches Players to European Leagues

EA has updated NHL 13’s roster to relocate players to European leagues. Players are migrating as the result of the continuing real-life NHL lockout, and EA’s new title update will reflect those changes in NHL 13.

As explained by EA, “An online roster update was released today for NHL 13. The update adds a duplicate version of NHL players who are playing in the following European leagues to their current team: Czech Extraliga (ELH), SM-Liiga, Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL), Elitserien (SEL), National League A (NLA). This means that a player like Claude Giroux will remain on the Philadelphia Flyers roster, but will also be available on the Eisbaren Berlin (DEL) roster for online play.”

EA added that “Hockey is a global game and within NHL 13 there are five European leagues, 66 European teams and over 2100 players representing 26 countries across Europe. By adding NHL players who have joined those leagues to their respective team rosters, we are able to create an authentic experience for fans of those leagues and the NHL, worldwide. For fans of a specific NHL team, those players will still be available on their NHL rosters, which could make for some interesting matchups online.”

Earlier this month, EA Sports executive vice president Andrew Wilson commented on the lockout, telling IGN “We’re all NHL fans. We’re all sports fans, but we’re definitely NHL fans. I spent six years in Vancouver, which is a hardcore hockey town. We hope that they all get to play soon, but in the meantime, I can tell you right now [NHL 13] is where I’m getting my hockey.”

A full list of player changes, as well as instructions for how to manually move NHL players to their current European teams for offline play, is available on EA’s official site.

Favela Returns to Modern Warfare 2

The Favela map has returned to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Following the removal of the map due to religious controversy, a new 17MB title update has now restored the map to Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer rotation for PlayStation 3 players.

Earlier this month, the map was removed by Infinity Ward following complaints from Muslim gamers over a quote from the Prophet Muhammad that appeared in one of the level’s bathrooms.

We’ve reached out to Infinity Ward for information on exactly what’s been changed in the update and when players on other platforms can expect Favela to return. We’ll update this story with any comment we receive.

Cyberpunk 2077 is CD Projekt RED’s Next Game

Announced earlier this year, CD Projekt RED’s in-development role-playing game Cyberpunk will now be known as Cyberpunk 2077. Aside from the official title reveal, CD Projekt RED reiterated that the game will feature a nonlinear story and dark, mature themes, which seems in line with the studio’s previous work on its Witcher franchise.

According to an official release, “Freedom of action and diversity in gameplay will be delivered thanks to the sandbox nature of the game and mechanics inspired by the “Cyberpunk 2020” pen-and-paper system, fine-tuned to meet the requirements of a modern RPG. Gameplay will pump adrenaline through players’ veins and be consistent with the celebrated Cyberpunk spirit – rebellion, style, edge, uncertainty.  And of course, a cyberpunk reality cannot be deprived of murderous steel – guns, rifles, implants, dozens of gadgets and other varied pieces of equipment needed to survive on the streets of Night City.”

That certainly sounds interesting, but because it’s still early in development Cyberpunk 2077 hasn't yet been shown off outside of the studio, so we don't yet know what it feels like to play. You can find more details on how the video game and the pen and paper game relate to each other in a new blog post on Cyberpunk 2077’s official site.

More news emerged from a recent special event held by GOG.com and CD Projekt RED. First, The Witcher 2 is now available for Mac. Second, GOG.com is also distributing games for Mac. As of right now 50 games are available for Apple’s OS. You can find additional deals and promotions for the Mac-compatible games, as well as an option to pay what you want for a number of classic Interplay titles, over on GOG.com.

Nightwing #13 Review

Though Nightwing #13 doesn't have one of those creepy, die-cut Joker covers, it has about as much to do with Death of the Family as any other ancillary Batman title released this month. That is to say -- expect plenty of pointless references to Joker's return that have no real bearing on the story at hand. Most glaring is a short sequence where Batgirl pops up out of nowhere to complain about not being prepared for a battle with Joker before disappearing just as quickly. I'm starting to think that the best course of action may be to avoid these books entirely for the next few months if this is what we can expect from Death of the Family tie-ins.

Elsewhere, guest writer Tom DeFalco eases in comfortably enough and continues the threads left open by Kyle Higgins. The issue provides a nice showcase of Dick's varied day and nighttime activities, the latter of which have taken on a new sense of urgency now hat Lady Shiva is back in town and Batman is off the grid. DeFalco is at his strongest during a showdown between Penguin and Nightwing where the former is begrudgingly helpful to his old enemy.

Unfortunately, bad dialogue and overwrought narration frequently drags the issue down. DeFalco's writing style is generally better suited for more lighthearted superhero fare, and he doesn't flourish in the seedier world of Gotham. His characters aren't always very convincing. The tone is fairly schizophrenic. Some characters like Batgirl are just flat-out annoying. Nor does Andres Guinaldo impress much with his pencils. His figures are loose and often distorted, and his action sequences simply aren't very engaging. Lady Shiva's new costume design, meanwhile, is another stinker in a long line of New 52 fashion faux pas.

In short, while there's some interesting material at play in this issue, the execution tends to fall flat. I'll be glad to welcome the regular creative team back in a couple months.

New ShootMania Feature: Lasers Destroy Rockets

In the above picture, you can see the resulting explosion of a laser striking a rocket in ShootMania, the newest title we are covering here at IGN Pro League. Lasers being able to destroy rockets is one of many new features that the developers at Nadeo are starting to experiment with to raise the skill ceiling, decision making, and variety in normal ShootMania games. At the moment, lasers being able to destroy rockets is merely an option that anyone creating a server can toggle on or off. Experimental Elite ran with this new feature for a while, in addition to some slightly modified movement and wall jumps.

Shooting down rockets in a server with this feature enabled will of course save you from being struck and losing a point of armor, but also recharges your laser nearly instantly so that you can strike back at the person attacking you very quickly. This and other features being implemented will improve gameplay by creating more unique situations and separating the truly skilled players from your run of the mill casual fraggers. Keep an eye on the patch notes in the ShootMania beta to see when features like this are implemented. If you are interested in getting your hands on ShootMania and trying out all of the various features, grab a 30-day beta key at http://go.ign.com/iplshootmania. NBA Live 13 Would Have Been Downloadable

Microsoft has revealed that EA’s canceled NBA Live 13 would have been a downloadable title. In a post on Twitter, Xbox Live’s Larry Hryb (Major Nelson) wrote “NBA Live 13 was supposed to be today's XBLA title, but EA made the decision not to launch it today.”

Hryb is referring to EA’s announcement last week that NBA Live 13 will not be released, as EA will instead hold off to focus on next year’s entry. While no platforms were ever discussed, it was previously assumed that NBA Live 13 was scheduled for a retail release since the last entry in the franchise -- NBA Live 10 -- was released on disc. Whether or not the game would have been exclusive to Xbox or multiplatform is unknown.

EA has discussed plans to continue the NBA Live franchise in the future, but whether that will be at retail or as a download remains to be seen. For more on EA’s decision not to release NBA Live 13, you can read the full statement from EA Sports executive vice president Andrew Wilson.

XCOM Shooter May Now Be Third-Person, Downloadable

A new rumor suggests that 2K’s XCOM shooter may have changed perspectives. According to a tip sent to Kotaku, the long-delayed title may now be a third-person shooter instead of the first-person game originally revealed.

The information comes from a survey allegedly sent out by 2K to gauge interest in the title, reporting that XCOM is still “being developed by the same people who created BioShock 2" – namely, 2K Marin. The survey includes a few screenshots – some of which can be seen above – and suggests that the game would have players commanding a team of agents, “which you can order around the map to perform various actions.”

The survey also asks players how they’d feel about the game being released as a $30 downloadable title instead of a $60 retail game, and refers to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions but does not mention PC. The shift prompts comparisons to Ubisoft's I Am Alive, which similarly transitioned from a retail title to downloadable late last year.

Not to be confused with XCOM: Enemy Unknown, which will hit stores this week, XCOM was originally announced in 2010 as a “re-imagining” of the strategy franchise, putting players in the shoes of an FBI agent “trying to wipe out a mysterious threat.” It was said to be coming in 2011 during E3 2010 and was shown off at the convention, looking promising.

XCOM was later assigned a release date of March 2012 and shown off once again at E3 2011 with a “changed formula.” It was later delayed to 2013, and after months of radio silence, 2K once again delayed the title in May of this year, pushing it to “fiscal 2014,” which means any time between April 2013 and March 2014.

The change to a third-person downloadable title hasn’t been confirmed, but we’ve reached out to 2K and will update with any comment they provide. In the meantime, XCOM fans can look forward to the more traditional, strategy-based XCOM: Enemy Unknown, which hits Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC on October 9th. For more on what Enemy Unknown has to offer, read our hands-on impressions and keep an eye out for our review very soon.

Game Freak Hopes to Release Harmo Knight Outside Japan

Good news for gamers outside Japan who are eager to get their hands on Rhythm Hunter Harmo Knight, the first full 3DS title by Pokémon developer Game Freak. In a recent IGN interview with Pokémon bigwig/Harmo Knight producer Junichi Masuda, he stated his desire to bring the game to North American and European audiences.

“In terms of a North American or European release, it's definitely something we'd like to do, but we're working out the details with Nintendo now and seeing what would be the best way to get that to players,” he said.

As for how this distinctly non-Pokemon game came to be, Masuda said it was conceived by James Turner, a British national who works at Game Freak. He and his team of 25 people have apparently been working on Harmo Knight for about a year and a half.

“Within Game Freak, we've implemented a kind of new system where employees can come up with original ideas for their games,” he said. “If they can find at least three co-workers to jump on the project and say they want to do it together, then they'll be able to proceed with that project.”

This company policy isn’t just to encourage the creation of cool, new IPs - it’s also meant to improve the quality of the Pokémon series. “One of the nice things about smaller projects like that is... since it's a project that you really wanted to do, you've kind of signed on to do that project. You're really interested in it,” he said. “There's also very few people and a short schedule, so everyone has to work on multiple aspects that they might not normally work with. So by doing that, you really build up experience, which translates back into the Pokémon games.”

For more from my interview with Masuda-san, as well as Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 director Takao Unno, head to this link. And, as always, stay tuned to IGN for all things 3DS.

Assassin's Creed 3 Achievements Leak

The achievement list for Assassin's Creed III has surfaced online, offering insight into both the story and gameplay features of the title.

The full list, which was uncovered by Exophase, reveals information about both the game's past and present day storylines, as well as various sidequests and features.

As you can probably guess, spoilers are about to follow.

First up, there are five achievements that detail Desmond's journey through Assassin's Creed III. Apparently we'll be exploring a present day stadium and skyscraper before facing Abstergo and learning Desmond's ultimate fate.

The new Homestead feature of the game, which will allow you to decorate your manor using the inventions of a certain Benjamin Franklin, also gets its own section of achievements. Apparently we'll be able to invite artisans and other "optional characters" to come and live with us, possibly to unlock discounts on services and other bonuses.

If that's not enough decorating and upgrading for you though, never fear; your ship, the Aquila, can also be decked out to make seafaring sidequests that little bit easier.

New Nintendo Land Attractions Announced

During this morning's Wii U Preview Event, Nintendo revealed a bit more information about its flagship launch title for the platform, Nintendo Land. We previously knew about eight of the 12 total "attractions" inside the package, but four remained a mystery. Now we know about two more.

"Mario Chase" is a refined, evolved version of the "Chase Mii" demo first showcased at E3 2011. Dressed as Mushroom Kingdom characters, four players will work together on the TV screen to chase down a fifth runner, who plays using the Wii U GamePad.

"Pikmin Adventure" will also be playable at the event later today, and Bill Trinen has described the game as an "action-based multiplayer attraction," with players having their Miis dressed up like Pikmin soldiers and working together to swarm enemies characters.

UPDATE! Here's a first look at new screens of the new attractions in action:
